If you are connecting to the front USB ports on a desktop, you should instead connect the drive to USB ports on the rear of the computer. In many cases, front USB ports will not be able to provide full power. Also, if you are connecting to a USB Hub, make sure it is a powered Hub (one that uses an AC adapter). If you still have trouble, it could be a sign of a failing hard drive.
